Sevilla are moving quickly to secure academy left-back Joaquín Martínez Gauna, Oso, whose rise from the reserves to a first-team role has been rapid. Lionel Scaloni is monitoring the 2003-born Torrevieja native as a fourth Europibe on Argentina’s radar.
Former Sevilla Atlético coach Jesús Galván called him “a modern full-back of which there are few”, he told ABC de Sevilla. He also praised Oso as “dynamic, very powerful and with an innate ability to create danger”, adding that he “could be that academy player Sevilla always bring through who ultimately generates value”.
Once a striker, his switch to the left flank has helped unlock that profile. Sevilla have already acted on his contract. His release clause is 15 million euros, rising automatically to 20 million if he plays 45 minutes in one more match, and a near-finalised renewal would lift it to 50 million.
Scaloni said he knows the Sevilla defender is eligible for Argentina through his parents and that “he has been doing well in recent matches”. The full-back also remains available to Spain.
Argentina have intensified recruitment of Spain-born players with Argentine roots, the Europibes. Alejandro Garnacho, Nico Paz and Pablo Maffeo are prominent examples, with Maffeo called up in 2023 and reaffirming his choice in 2025 without an official debut. A first call-up with either nation promises to further boost Oso’s market value.
