FLW's Sheffield United fan pundit explains why new deals for Jairo Riedewald and Patrick Bamford are a must
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Sheffield United are in talks with both Jairo Riedewald and Patrick Bamford regarding extending their current contracts.
Chris Wilder has confirmed that the club are keen to keep the pair after they arrived in the last couple of months as free agents, with the length of the possible extensions mentioned as a key negotiating point.
Riedewald was available following his exit from Royal Antwerp at the end of last season after just one year with the Dutch side, and he has gone on to make nine appearances in the Championship since arriving at Bramall Lane in October.
Meanwhile, Bamford signed in November, just months after his seven-year association with Leeds United came to an end with the conclusion of the previous campaign.
The 32-year-old has already bagged two goals from four appearances in the league for the Blades, who are looking to climb the second division table after a difficult first half of the term.

When asked what kind of deal the club should offer the pair, FLW’s Sheffield United fan pundit Jimmy claimed that the Blades should be pushing for a two-plus-one deal for Riedewald given he is still only 29 and the level of performance he’s brought to the team.
He’s credited the former Crystal Palace player with helping Sydie Peck become a greater attacking threat, suggesting his arrival has been key to the team’s improved form in recent weeks.
“Jairo has been a class act since he’s come in,” Jimmy told Football League World.
“He’s really given us balance in the centre of midfield, it’s allowed Sydie Peck to be a little bit more forward thinking, and it’s allowed him to flourish a little bit more.
“So, while Sydie Peck is getting some of the headlines for recently scoring for United, and a brilliant volley against Leicester, he’s able to do that because of what Jairo Riedewald gives the side.
“In terms of what contract I think we should be offering him, I’d be looking at at least a two plus one deal for him, so two years guaranteed and a plus one in our favour.
“He’s only 29-years-old, he adds necessary experience in the squad, by all accounts Wilder is really pleased with him as a character.
“So, hopefully, we can get this deal done because I think it’s really important, certainly for our season but also for us as a club going forward.”
Jimmy also believes that it is an easy decision to want to keep Bamford, even after just a few games in the side, praising his impact so far.
“Patrick Bamford is also a no-brainer for me at the moment as well,” he added.
“Not played that much football, but looks a class act when he’s come onto the field.
“I think both signings have been really strong for Sheffield United, hopefully we can get the deals done.”
Next up for Sheffield United is a home clash against Norwich City on Tuesday night in a 7.45pm kick-off.

Riedewald has been an excellent addition to Sheffield United, and it’s no coincidence that their performances and results have picked up as he’s grown into the team.
Keeping him beyond January and into the next couple of years could be great work for the club if they can get an agreement over the line.
Bamford has also proven a very useful addition to the squad as well, with his goals against Portsmouth and Stoke City showing he can still compete at this level.
