Wilder is set to be sacked by the Blades this week.
Sheffield United are reported to be in advanced talks with former Hull City boss Ruben Selles to take over from Chris Wilder.
COH Sports, the American owners of the Blades, have decided to part ways with Wilder after they missed out on the chance to make a quick return to the Premier League. He is set to be sacked, as called by The Telegraph, and the official announcement of his departure is expected to come this week.
Selles' name was linked with Bramall Lane before the revelations about the 57-year-old United boss' future came out. He was then linked again in The Telegraph's report.
Former Wolves boss Gary O'Neill was also stated to be a candidate by the national outlet, but there have been conflicting reports on how much he is being considered by the Championship club's hierarchy.
Soon after news broke of Wilder's exit, Andy Giddings said that the club, who finished just outside the automatic promotion spots in the second tier last time out, were in advanced talks with a replacement for their current manager. According to Football Insider, Selles is that man.
They have reportedly approached the 42-year-old, who lost his job at the MKM Stadium just over a month ago after he guided the Tigers to safety. Prior to that, he did a stellar job of steadying Reading's slowly sinking ship and then elevating them to a play-off calibre.
His sacking by Hull came as a shock to many, given the squad that he had to work with and the fact that he hit the target set before him, to keep the club from going down.
Selles has been linked with a number of positions since being binned by City, but is on the verge of landing the biggest opportunity he has had since he first came to England to join Southampton in the Premier League, as per Football Insider.
It is certainly a bold and risky move by the Blades' American owners to get rid of Wilder. He oversaw a 90-point season last term and surpassed the mark of having managed 300 games for the club.
As replacements go, Selles is a decent option. He has proven that he can get results in incredibly difficult circumstances and should only be helped by the improved resources that he would have at Bramall Lane.
If fluid, attacking football is what COH Sports are expecting from the Spaniard, though, then they be in line for a bit of a surprise as that's not really the brand of football that Selles has so far shown throughout his career.
