Sheffield United are among the clubs linked with a move for the FC Basel forward
Sheffield United are considering an approach for FC Basel winger Philip Otele this summer.
According to All Nigeria Soccer, the 26-year-old could be available to move despite just making the permanent switch to Switzerland from Al-Wahda of the UAE for €3 million.
The Nigeria international spent the second half of the previous campaign on loan with the Swiss team, where he helped the club clinch the league title, before joining on a permanent basis through an option to buy clause.
He contributed nine goals and four assists in 18 appearances in the Super League, with Basel clinching top spot in the Super League by 10 points.
It has been claimed that the Blades are one of several clubs monitoring the situation surrounding Otele this summer.
While Otele only confirmed his permanent move to Basel earlier this summer, it’s understood an exit could yet still be on the cards - they could even make profit on the Nigerian attacker.
The likes of Fulham, Burnley and Brentford have all been offered the chance to sign the winger, with Sheffield United also monitoring the situation accordingly.
German clubs Borussia Monchengladbach and Augsburg are also considering an approach for the 26-year-old following his impressive performances for Basel.
Otele has a contract until the summer of 2028, but could be open to a move away from Basel this year despite only spending six months with the club so far, and he's currently a team-mate of former Blades striker Benie Traore, who spent just half a season at Bramall Lane before being loaned out to Nantes, and then subsequently sold to Basel after just one year on the books.
Traore, like Otele, had a successful time of things with Basel as well, scoring 13 times in the league whilst also notching eight assists.
Should Otele arrive at Sheffield United, he would follow a fellow Nigerian through the door, as they have already completed the a deal to bring youngster Ehje Ukaki to the club from Botev Plovdiv.
Sheffield United could be looking to bolster their wide options this summer for Selles, and Otele would be an interesting option.
He played well for Basel for just half a season, and proved he can score goals consistently with a tally of nine in 18 matches, as well as his record for CFR Cluj of Romania also being exemplary.
His lack of English football experience will be a concern though, and it remains unclear just how much it would cost to get him out of Switzerland after he just moved there.
