Sheffield Wednesday have entered administration, bringing an ignominious close to Dejphon Chansiri’s turbulent decade as owner. The Championship club, burdened by mounting debts and unpaid wages, have been docked 12 points by the EFL and now sit bottom of the table on -6 points, as reported by BBC Sport.
Administrators Julian Pitts, Kris Wigfield, and Paul Stanley of Begbies Traynor were formally appointed after His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs moved to issue a winding-up petition. The trio will oversee operations while seeking new ownership to stabilise the financially stricken club. “Our priority is to protect the interests of creditors and ensure Wednesday can continue to operate,” said Wigfield. “We need fans back, every ticket and pie sold helps keep the club alive.”
Chansiri, who took control in 2015 with ambitions of a Premier League return, leaves behind a legacy of broken promises and financial instability. Despite early progress, including a 2016 play-off final appearance, years of overspending, EFL sanctions, and late wage payments pushed the club to the brink.
The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust confirmed their boycott of Hillsborough matches has ended, urging fans to rally behind the team as the search for new owners begins, SWST board member Rob Brookes saying, “We hope for a bumper crowd on Saturday.”
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy called the situation “deeply worrying,” saying it underscores the need for the new Independent Football Regulator. “Owners must act as custodians, not gamblers,” she said.
For now, the administrators insist fixtures will continue as scheduled, and discussions are already underway with several interested buyers.
