Sheffield Wednesday have renewed their interest in Reading midfielder Andy Rinomhota.

Sheffield Wednesday are continuing to put the building blocks in place ahead of the summer transfer window following David Storch's takeover.

Former owner Dejphon Chansiri's damaging actions and the Owls' subsequent time in administration have left them with a squad that is thin on the ground.

The South Yorkshire outfit's relegation from the Championship to League One was confirmed in February, having been fast-tracked by their 18-point deduction.

However, the takeover from Arise Capital Partners, overseen by Storch, has left Wednesday in a position where they can start building for the future again.

The Owls will not be given a 15-point deduction next term, nor will their weekly wages be capped at £7,000 per player, as had been initially feared when they exited administration.

Consequently, the South Yorkshire side can vie to battle at the right end of the League One table, although they will still be subject to some EFL budget restrictions.

The Owls are in a strong position to plot their summer transfer swoops, as Storch was able to complete his takeover by the 1 May deadline that he set himself.

Storch's early May takeover also ensured that there was a party atmosphere at Hillsborough Stadium for their clash with West Bromwich Albion on the final day of the Championship season.

Fittingly, Wednesday defeated West Brom 2-1 on 2 May, which marked their only home victory of the second-tier campaign, and just their second victory overall.

Meanwhile, the South Yorkshire outfit must strengthen their squad in several areas to bolster their chances of sealing an instant Championship return.

According to the Reading Chronicle, Wednesday have renewed their interest in Royals midfielder Andy Rinomhota, who has been offered a new contract by the Berkshire outfit, but has yet to decide on his future.

Consequently, the Owls may be able to sign Rinomhota on a free transfer ahead of next season, should he opt against a new deal with his current club.

The 29-year-old made just three League One appearances for the Royals this term, which was due to some family circumstances and competition for places, as revealed by the Reading Chronicle's Ramy Abou-Setta on X.

Rinomhota's only start for Leam Richardson's men this term arrived on 18 April, when they were beaten 3-1 by Cardiff City, who clinched automatic promotion alongside third-tier champions Lincoln City.

Wednesday's previous off-field struggles have left them in a position where they have lots of work to do in the summer transfer market.

Midfielders Nathaniel Chalobah and Marvelous Nakamba have both left Hillsborough Stadium following the expiration of their contracts, meaning the Owls have to strengthen in that area of the pitch.

Therefore, Rinomhota is a great option for Henrik Pedersen's men, should he become available on a free transfer.

The Zimbabwe international was a regular feature for Reading in the Championship before leaving them in favour of Cardiff in the summer of 2022.

He also made 16 second-tier appearances while on loan for Rotherham United, then under the stewardship of Royals boss Richardson during the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.

Rinomhota's lack of game time for Reading this term could prompt his exit, but there is no reason why he can't be a star performer in League One for Wednesday, having made 30 Championship outings for Cardiff just last term.
