It was a rare slow start from Brentford and the home side capitalised by converting their first chance of the game. Devlan Moses composed himself well in the box and finished well from close range.
There were two near misses from the away side as Michel Boni and Theo Mawene went close with efforts on goal from outside the box.
On 19 minutes, Laidlaw powered past his defender on the wing before attempting to place an effort into the bottom corner but Jack Phillips made a good save to deny the attacker.
A flurry of chances followed as Luca Picotto had a header cleared off the line and from the resulting corner, Laidlaw also had a close-range shot denied by a goal-line clearance.
It was a dominant period of play from the west Londoners but they were reminded of the home side's threat as a rare attack from the young Owls saw first-half substitute Joel Akpobi go close with a shot inside the box that went wide.
Will Grainger should have doubled his team's lead as he was found unmarked in the area, however his shot was dragged wide.
On the stroke of the half-time, Brentford levelled and it came through Laidlaw who did well to cut in from the left flank and curl a shot into the corner of the net.

Andre Grey had the first opening of the second period as he curled an effort goalwards which only just went over the bar.
The positive start to the half was rewarded as Owen pounced on a loose ball from the goalkeeper and, after some silky skills to create an opening, the midfielder found the bottom corner of the net leaving Phillips with no chance.
Brentford should have scored again as Jospeh Wheeler-Henry powered into the box and shrugged off his opponent but the resulting shot hit the post.
The away side saw out the rest of the game without giving the Owls a chance to equalise.
The west Londoners will next be in action on Tuesday 31 March when they take on Fleetwood Town at Gtech Community Stadium.

Brentford Under-21s assistant head coach Chris Burke reflected positively on the Bees’ 2-1 victory against Sheffield Wednesday.
“It was not the start we were looking for, but we continued to do the right things and stayed calm, and that was the message throughout even at half-time when the scores were level,” he said.
“The experience the lads showed to see the game out was really impressive, and I felt we fully deserved the win today.”
