Questions will be asked of German after late World Cup semi-final defeat

A plethora of pundits have had their say on whether Thomas Tuchel should be sacked after England’s last-minute elimination by Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals.

The Three Lions went into the final five minutes of regulation time ahead against the defending champions, before Enzo Fernandez was afforded too much space on the edge of the box.

The Chelsea midfielder fired beyond Jordan Pickford from range, and as the England defence drifted deeper and deeper, Lionel Messi dug out a cross that Lautaro Martinez nodded home in the third minute of seven added on.

The manner of England’s defeat left fans angry on social media, and several pundits shared the disappointment across the various TV and radio channels.

Here is the best of the bunch…

Jamie O’Hara

On talkSPORT, Jamie O’Hara claimed that the head coach had “cost us the World Cup”.

“I can't believe it, it's a disgrace. He should be sacked, get him out, gone!”

Troy Deeney

On CBS, Troy Deeney voiced the same opinion.

“For someone at the FA, whoever makes the decision, if that guy thinks this is the best, we [aren’t] going to win, so either sack him or leave your job.”

Chris Sutton

Tuchel decided to bring on defenders Dan Burn, Ezri Konsa and Nico O’Reilly to see the game out at the Atlanta Stadium in Georgia, which Chris Sutton could not believe on BBC Five Live.

“It was a coaching catastrophe from Tuchel,” the former striker said.

“The fact that England get themselves in front and then basically hand Argentina the initiative, defending deep, another defender on.

“It’s quite a simple game, football, you have to get up the pitch. You can’t expect to defend for 30 minutes against the quality Argentina have and keep giving the ball back to them, that’s what England did and it’s all on the coach as far as I’m concerned.

“He made the changes, he was negative. So the question which I’m going to ask is, how can you trust Tuchel to take this England team forward?”

Jason Cundy

Back on talkSPORT, Jason Cundy branded the German’s tactics as “cowardly”.

“Same England, different manager, I'm afraid. Wow, I mean talk about not just throwing it away, but hand the initiative and then throw it away.

“To go out the way that we did again, it's cowardly.”

Tim Vickery

On the BBC, Tim Vickery said: “I can’t believe that Spain will self-destruct in the way that England self-destructed. I am absolutely baffled by the decisions that the coach has taken here.

“Argentina were let back into the game by the England team choosing all the wrong decisions and this has to be on the coach.”

Others took a more compassionate view of the former Chelsea boss…

Patrick Vieira

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira said on ‘The Rest is Football’ show that, “You would be mad to sack him or to change the coach.”

"I believe in stability,” he continued.

"I think that was his first big tournament and of course there are some positives and negatives and the frustration is going to be there because you are out like that. But how can he build from that?”

Peter Reid

On BBC Breakfast, the former Manchester City and Sunderland manager said that the FA “had” to stick by their man.

“I am disappointed at the result and the better team won, but we’ve got to a semi-final.

“You’ve got to stick with him, you can’t keep changing managers," he said.
