Sidny Cabral was criticised by Benfica fans after asking Vinícius Jr. for his shirt at full-time in Madrid.

Benfica were knocked out 1-2 by Real Madrid in the play-off for a place in the Champions League last 16. As reported by Glorioso 1904, the moment came after a tie overshadowed by flashpoints involving Gianluca Prestianni and Vinícius Jr. in the first leg at Estádio da Luz.

With few controversies during the return match at the Santiago Bernabéu, Benfica’s No 15, a winter signing for José Mourinho’s side, walked over to the Brazilian forward after the whistle. Video from the stands shows the former Estrela da Amadora approaching Real Madrid’s No 7, who pointed towards the tunnel, indicating they would swap once off the pitch.

The footage sparked anger among some supporters on social media. They flooded Sidny Lopes Cabral’s most recent Instagram post, made four days earlier with photos from the AFS SAD match at the Estádio da Luz, a game Benfica won 3-0, with critical messages.

Dozens urged him to respect the club, defend his team-mate and even leave, with some saying he should stay on the bench for the rest of the season. Others mocked the shirt request and told him to remain in Madrid.

Vinícius Jr. had alleged that Prestianni called him “mono”, Spanish for monkey, during the celebration of his goal at the Luz.
