Silvino’s passing at the age of 67 following an illness was announced on Thursday night.

The Portuguese was a valued member of Mourinho’s backroom staff across his compatriot’s illustrious managerial career between 2001-18, working with him across a number of Europe’s biggest clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Porto.

In 23 years as a player, Silvino was a legendary figure at Benfica following a decade-long spell at the club, also representing Porto, Vitoria Setubal, Vitoria Guimaraes, Aves and Salgueiros before retiring in 2000 at the age of 41.

He also earned 23 senior international caps for Portugal from 1983-97 and spent time as his country’s goalkeeping coach.

In a statement, Manchester United said: “Manchester United is saddened to learn our former goalkeeping coach Silvino Louro has passed away at the age of 67.

“The Portuguese joined the club in 2016 after the appointment of Jose Mourinho.

“Silvino had previously worked closely with our former manager at Chelsea, Real Madrid, Internazionale and Porto.

“In nearly three seasons at United, Louro oversaw a tight-knit goalkeeping group that included David De Gea, Sergio Romero, Sam Johnstone and Joel Pereira.

“The former Benfica stopper was notably part of a Reds squad that lifted three trophies in 2016/17 - the FA Community Shield, League Cup and UEFA Europa League.

“Our thoughts are with Silvino’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

Chelsea wrote on X: “Everyone at Chelsea FC is deeply saddened by the passing of our former goalkeeping coach, Silvino Louro.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this difficult time. “

Benfica, where Mourinho is currently the manager, said: “Benfica expresses its deepest sorrow over the passing of Silvino.

“Former goalkeeper of the Club and the National Team, he will forever remain in the memory of Benfica fans as a striking figure of a generation that greatly honored the badge on their chest.

“To the family and friends, the Club extends its most heartfelt condolences.”

Porto head coach Francesco Farioli said that current No1 Diogo Costa’s impressive performance in the 2-0 Europa League win over Stuttgart on Thursday night “honoured Silvino’s memory”.

Real Madrid said: “Real Madrid C. F., its president, and its Board of Directors deeply regret the passing of Silvino Louro, Real Madrid's goalkeeping coach from 2010 to 2013.

“Real Madrid wishes to express its condolences, affection, and sympathy to his family, colleagues, clubs, and all his loved ones.

“During the three seasons he was part of Real Madrid's coaching staff under José Mourinho, Silvino Louro won 1 La Liga, 1 Copa del Rey, and 1 Supercopa de España.

“Silvino Louro passed away at the age of 67. Rest in peace.”

An Inter Milan statement read: “FC Internazionale Milano would like to express its condolences on the passing of Silvino de Almeida Louro, a long-time member of José Mourinho's staff and the Inter first-team goalkeeping coach from 2008 to 2010.

“After a 23-year career in goal, Silvino began working under Mourinho, staying with him from 2001 to 2018.

“At Inter, he coached a cohort of keepers composed of Julio Cesar, Francesco Toldo and Paolo Orlandoni, who is currently on Cristian Chivu's staff in the same role.

“Plenty of personality and charisma, it wasn't uncommon to see Silvino wearing the gloves and taking part in drills firsthand at Appiano Gentile.

“During his two seasons at the Club, his contribution was key to the Nerazzurri winning two league titles, two Supercoppas, one Coppa Italiana, and the Champions League in 2010. The Club's thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”
