Club Brugge said in a statement on Thursday that Belgium goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, 38, will retire at the end of the season. He will take up a director role at the Belgian FA from 1 September.

He has made over 300 appearances for Brugge since 2019. The Champions League play-offs are set to be the final 10 matches of his career. He wants to finish on a high by delivering a 20th league title and a second star for Brugge.

Mignolet began at hometown club Sint-Truiden from 2006 to 2010, then joined Sunderland from 2010 to 2013. Liverpool followed in 2013.

At Anfield he experienced highs and lows, with Jürgen Klopp describing him as the most intelligent goalkeeper he had worked with. He reached the 2016 Europa League final and ended his last season in England by winning the Champions League as Alisson Becker’s deputy. He made 204 appearances for Liverpool across six seasons.

At Brugge he rediscovered his best form, winning league titles in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2024. He also lifted the Belgian Super Cup in 2021, 2022 and 2025, plus the Belgian Cup last season.

For Belgium he made his debut in 2011 and served as Thibaut Courtois’s understudy at World Cups in 2014, 2018 and 2022 and at Euro 2016 and Euro 2021. He featured seven times in the Nations League and 18 times in qualifiers, and retired from international duty in March 2023 with 35 caps.
