Nottingham Forest have begun pre-season under Oliver Glasner, with a quiet start to recruitment as quality outweighs quantity.

According to Nottingham Post, the squad returned to the Nigel Doughty Academy on Monday and met their new head coach, who now has six weeks to prepare for Leeds United at the City Ground on August 22.

Forest want to avoid another relegation battle and push back towards Europe after a strong finish under Vitor Pereira. Chairman Nicholas Randall KC has stressed keeping the core together while strengthening in key areas, with character and quality prioritised.

Deals rarely race through, and a World Cup year adds complexity. There is no panic over the lack of additions, though rivals know funds are available after Elliot Anderson’s £116m move to Manchester City, so value will be scrutinised.

Midfield is the main focus following Anderson’s exit. Two signings in that area remain possible, with previous interest maintained in Celtic’s Arne Engels and Inter Milan’s Davide Frattesi alongside other options.

Defence also needs attention given Glasner’s preference for a back three and wing-backs. Centre-back reinforcements are being explored amid speculation around Morato and Jair Cunha, while loans could suit youngsters Zach Abbott and Tyler Bindon.

With Nicolo Savona’s future uncertain, a full-back could be required. With Matz Sels and John Victor the only senior goalkeepers, another option may be considered.

Owner Evangelos Marinakis has set a clear ambition for silverware and success, and Glasner is viewed as the figure to elevate Forest. The new era begins in earnest with Saturday’s friendly at Notts County, 3pm at Meadow Lane.
