Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor has expressed her delight at the progress of summer signing Alyssa Thompson, praising the young forward for her growing influence in the team and her standout display in the London derby against Arsenal.
Thompson, who joined Chelsea from Angel City in September, has been gradually introduced into the squad as she adapts to life in the Women’s Super League.
The 21-year-old was handed a starting place in the highly anticipated clash with Arsenal and wasted no time making an impression.
The American international opened the scoring in the ninth-minute with a moment of individual brilliance. Her explosive pace saw her surge up the pitch before linking up with Johanna Rytting Kaneryd in a quick exchange and delivering a precise finish into the top corner. It was her first league goal for the club, a strike that immediately showcased her talent and composure on the big stage.
Although Arsenal equalised late in the match through Alessia Russo, denying Chelsea all three points, Thompson’s performance was one of the brightest aspects of the afternoon. Her energy and direct play repeatedly troubled the Arsenal defence, particularly during a first half where Chelsea dominated large spells.
After the match, Sonia Bompastor spoke glowingly about the development of Alyssa Thompson and the growing impact she is having on the team.
“I’m glad she plays for Chelsea,” Bompastor said. “You can see how much talent she has and the quality she brings to the team. I think she’s improving game after game, becoming more connected to her teammates, and understanding the way we want to play better. I think that’s good. She had a good game today, and having a player like her in the team helps us.”
She also noted that Thompson’s attitude and ability to adapt have been key to her steady integration into the squad. Her willingness to learn and contribute has not gone unnoticed, and Bompastor’s comments reflected her confidence that the young forward will continue to develop.
After the game, Thompson said: “It was amazing, it felt like a dream. I was in shock, honestly! I was really happy, and it was so nice celebrating with the girls and just having them all around me.”
Thompson’s goal and all-round performance underlined why Chelsea were keen to bring her to London. Her speed, technical quality, and sharp movement added a new dimension to the Blues’ attack. As she continues to build chemistry with her teammates, she is quickly becoming an important part of Bompastor’s plans.
Chelsea are no longer top of the table after their draw with Arsenal. The 1-1 draw raised more calls for VAR to be introduced to the WSL.
The Blues will hope to jump back to the top of the table this weekend when they play Liverpool. They are one point behind Manchester City, who face Manchester United.
Chelsea are also in action on Tuesday night against St. Polten in the Champions League. Chelsea have been boosted by Lauren James who is part of the travelling squad for the game.
