Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is about to face the media ahead of tomorrow night’s Chelsea – Benfica game, and there’s more than just 3 big points at stake.
The Blues have had a major wobble recently, drawing to Brentford, losing to Bayern Munich, Man U and Brighton, and only struggling to a draw against League One Lincoln in the cup after going behind.
Already the knives are out for Enzo Maresca – not just because of a few bad results, but because of the general sense that he’s not happy and that things could rapidly get worse with results. There are a lot of injuries, including to key players in defence and to Cole Palmer.
Chelsea with and without Cole Palmer.
But Football.London insist that Maresca is safe – in fact, they say that he’s safe even if he loses both of this week’s games to Benfica and then to Liverpool. That should be no surprise really – while things look bad now., Chelsea have actually lost just 5 of their last 24 game, and 4 of those defeats came when we were down to ten men.
Bayern were the only team to beat us XI vs XI. The reports from Matt Law last night back this up, claiming that those in charge are more than understanding that injuries and red cards are what really have hurt this team.
We’ve consistently said all week that we don’t think Maresca is going anywhere anytime soon, and these sources reports back us up. But things can still spiral quickly, and if we do lose both games this week the pressure will be quite incredible.
Benfica at home with a depleted squad won’t be easy – a draw looks so likely right now we’d have to back it.
