About 342 miles from Mexico City, where the world’s attention will be focused on the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, another World Cup game will be kicking off later that night in Guadalajara.
And chances are, not many people will be paying attention.
By then, Mexican fans will either be celebrating a dream start to the tournament or spending hours arguing about substitutions, missed chances and whether Javier Aguirre got his lineup right.
Meanwhile, at Estadio Guadalajara, South Korea and Czechia will begin their own World Cup journey in a match that may not generate many headlines on opening day, but could end up being one of the most important games in Group A.
These are often the matches that shape a group. The ones people overlook at first and suddenly remember when the standings start getting tight.
South Korea arrives at its 11th straight World Cup and once again carries the banner for Asian football.
Led by Hong Myung-bo, the Koreans breezed through qualifying and bring a talented squad headlined by Son Heung-min, Lee Kang-in and Kim Min-jae.
They are a team that likes to play at a high tempo, press aggressively and attack quickly whenever space opens up.
Czechia’s path has been very different.
The Europeans are back at the World Cup for the first time in two decades after surviving a pair of tense playoff rounds. They may not have the biggest names in the tournament, but they have a well-drilled squad, plenty of experience and one of Europe’s most reliable strikers in Patrik Schick.
One of the most interesting battles could come between Kim Min-jae and Schick. If Czechia wants to get anything from this game, their star striker will need to find a way past one of the best defenders in the tournament.
The midfield battle should be just as important, with Lee Jae-sung and Tomáš Souček expected to set the tone for their respective teams.
The reality is simple: both teams know how valuable three points would be.
Mexico is widely expected to challenge for the top spot in the group, which makes this opening match feel even bigger. Win, and suddenly the path to the Round of 16 becomes much clearer. Lose, and the pressure starts immediately.
The two nations have only met three times, all in friendlies.
So if you’re looking for a favorite based on history, good luck.

Opening games are rarely pretty. The nerves, the pressure and the fear of making a costly mistake usually lead to cautious football, especially when both teams know they cannot afford to lose.
South Korea will probably see more of the ball, while Czechia will look to stay organized and strike on the counter or from set pieces.
A draw feels like the safest bet: South Korea 1-1 Czechia
It won’t have the fireworks of the tournament opener in Mexico City. But while everyone is busy talking about Mexico and South Africa, don’t be surprised if the game taking place 342 miles away in Guadalajara ends up playing a huge role in deciding who survives Group A.
