Southampton is still on the lookout for a new manager to replace Ivan Juric, one of the worst Premier League managers of all time. While the shoes to fill aren't necessarily big, Southampton will be eager to hire an experienced name with the hope of returning to the Premier League.
Many would assume that Danny Rohl is the confirmed manager for next season, but this isn't factually correct. He might be the favourite, but nothing is confirmed yet. Let's not forget that Rohl was considered the favourite to replace Russell Martin originally, yet that move never came into fruition.
So, the Saints are best-placed to keep their options open. At least this time (compared to when Martin left), the Saints are afforded the luxury of time. They do not need to rush into any decision, and they could even spend all summer deciding before the Championship season commences (of course, earlier than the Premier League season usually would).
According to a report from talkSPORT, David Wagner is one of the options being explored by Southampton as it stands. The former Huddersfield Town and Norwich City manager has experience in the Championship, even winning the playoffs with Huddersfield in 2017.
Nobody anticipated Huddersfield to be playing in the Premier League in the 2017-18 season, but Wagner was a key reason why they exceeded all expectations. As someone with experience of being promoted from the Championship, it is clear to see why the Saints consider him as an option.
The report states that Southampton would like to take their time before making a decision, so Saints fans are not expected to hear any concrete news anytime soon. However, it's believed that Wagner's name is at least involved in Southampton's internal discussion and decision making.
