Southampton are weighing alternative striker targets after an attempt to land Will Lankshear was rebuffed. According to Sainstmarching.com, the club had a summer approach for the Tottenham Hotspur youngster, a one-time Oxford United loanee, turned down, though interest persists.

With competition fierce for the 21-year-old, attention is shifting to options to replace the departed Ross Stewart. A free transfer move for Josh Maja has been floated, while Ivan Azon, who spent last season at Ipswich Town, is also under consideration.

A £nine million move for Azon is reportedly being explored, although the Spaniard scored only five Championship goals. That fee therefore looks punchy.

The report also flags Noel Futkeu, who struck 19 goals in Bundesliga 2 for Greuther Furth last season. Another name pushed forward is Gabriele Artistico, who played in Serie B for Spezia while on loan from Lazio.

The six-foot-one forward hit 14 in 33 and impressed aerially, averaging four point seven total duels won. He has 69 career goals in 201 appearances and could be a wildcard successor to Stewart if Southampton choose to gamble.

With Spurs showing little inclination to part with Lankshear, different avenues may be required. Artistico is one that could come into focus if a surprise move materialised.
