Paul Onuachu has struggled since joining Southampton. Despite proving his worth before signing for the Saints in Belgium and again going on a goal-scoring spree on loan in Turkey, he has failed to live up to expectation in England.
However, there is no denying that there's a gem to be uneartheed in Paul Onuachu. In fact, if he were to leave the Saints at this stage, it would be a disappointment to say the least.
So, what does Russell Martin think about Onuachu and if it were down to the boss, would Paul stay or go?
According to a report from the Daily Echo, Russell Martin has heaped a lot of praise on Paul Onuachu. In fact, he has outrightly said that he wants the Nigerian striker to stay at Southampton.
In his own words, Martin said: “Yes, I think I want (Onuachu) to stay. If he was going to go, I think it would have been in the summer for the club to reinvest the money.”
Russell Martin spoke about how the interested clubs in the summer transfer window were not serious enough for Southampton to consider. Therefore, this is the reason why Southampton kept ahold of him.
Martin forecasted that there would be plenty more interest in Onuachu in the January transfer window. He also claimed that those clubs who were not serious enough about signing him in the summer could now be kicking themselves.
To conclude, Martin said: “I’m sure there will also be a few people kicking themselves that they clearly didn’t quite want him enough in the summer. For me, if Paul is happy, we’re really happy and we want him here as he can help us achieve what we want to achieve this season."
Naturally, there will be clubs interested in signing Paul Onuachu. He is an immensely talented player and for the right club, he would be a serious goal-scorer.
Russell Martin hopes that the right club is Southampton. They might just need to adapt their playing style to better suit Onuachu. At the moment, he is forced to play too deep if he stands a chance of picking up the ball. This is not something which suits any goal-scoring striker.
