Spain travel to North America for the FIFA World Cup this summer among the favourites to lift the trophy for a second time.

La Roja arrive as reigning European champions, having beaten England in the Euro 2024 final. Their sole World Cup triumph came in South Africa in 2010. FIFA’s second-ranked side qualified with the swagger expected of a tournament heavyweight. Luis de la Fuente confirmed his 26-man squad on 25 May at the Edificio Telefónica in Madrid. The squad’s defining feature has drawn fierce debate: not a single Real Madrid player made the cut. Dean Huijsen and Dani Carvajal both missed out after Los Blancos’ troubled season. The bigger worry, though, surrounds Lamine Yamal. The 18-year-old Barcelona forward suffered a hamstring injury against Celta Vigo and may miss the opening fixtures.

De la Fuente expects him available against Uruguay, if not sooner. Gavi’s return from long-term injury offers an emotional lift. Manchester City’s Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, anchors a midfield brimming with quality. Pedri, Fabián Ruiz and Martín Zubimendi provide the controlling rhythm. Barcelona’s Fermín López misses the tournament with a broken foot.

Spain enjoy enviable goalkeeping depth, with Unai Simón, David Raya and Joan García competing for the gloves. The defence, anchored by 19-year-old Pau Cubarsí and Aymeric Laporte, is the squad’s least settled department.

Group H pairs them with Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. Cape Verde, tournament debutants, open proceedings in Atlanta. Saudi Arabia, who famously beat Argentina in 2022, follow. Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay loom as the likely decider for top spot. Spain base themselves in Chattanooga, Tennessee, throughout the group stage.
