Spain winger Yeremy Pino has avoided a collarbone fracture and Nico Williams has sustained a groin injury after both came on in the second half of the 1-0 win over Uruguay in Guadalajara on Friday. The federation announced that Pino has an acromioclavicular sprain and described both issues as moderate, with recoveries to dictate availability. Initial fears that Pino could miss the rest of the World Cup were eased by the update.
Both 23, Pino and Williams underwent scans on Saturday amid concerns within the Spain camp that the pair could miss the remainder of the tournament. If either is ruled out, Spain cannot call up replacements, with FIFA’s deadline set 24 hours before a team’s first match.
Spain qualified for the knockouts as Group H winners, drawing with Cape Verde then beating Saudi Arabia before Friday’s victory. De la Fuente’s side will face the Group J runners-up, either Austria or Algeria, in the last 32 in Los Angeles on 2 June.
Potential absences leave Spain light in wide areas. Luis de la Fuente has started Alex Baena and Lamine Yamal in the last two games, with Yamal still on managed minutes after a recent hamstring problem.
On the bench, Liverpool signing Victor Munoz has yet to feature after a calf setback early in the tournament, and his return will be handled carefully. Ferran Torres is the only senior wide option available among the substitutes, though he has struggled for form and missed chances against Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
