Sporting CP host Benfica in Liga Portugal on Sunday, 19 April 2026 at Estádio José Alvalade, with second facing third in a game that could shape the title race and test the visitors' unbeaten league record.
Sporting CP start second on 71 points from 28 matches, while Benfica are third on 69 from 29 and remain unbeaten. The reverse league meeting finished 1-1 in December.
Leões have won three of their last four league games, including 4-2 against Santa Clara and 1-0 at Estrela Amadora. Águias have kept their run steady, beating Vitória S.C. 3-0 and Nacional 2-0, with draws at Porto and Casa Pia in between.
Leões are without Nuno Santos, Fotis Ioannidis, Iván Fresneda and Luis Guilherme through injury. Águias miss Nuno Felix and João Veloso.
Both sides defend well, each conceding 0.6 goals per game with 14 clean sheets. Leões carry a strong attacking edge too, averaging 2.6 goals per match with 61% possession and 87.70% pass accuracy. Luis Suárez leads the league scoring on 24 goals, with Pedro Gonçalves on 13 and Trincão joint-top for assists on 11. Encarnados post 2.1 goals per game and 59% possession, led by Evangelos Pavlidis on 21 goals, while Gianluca Prestianni and Sidny Cabral have contributed four and five assists respectively. Benfica have taken 11 league penalties, converting 90.9%, so pressure in the box could be a key route. Leões, with only one goal from set pieces, may again lean on open-play fluency.
A home win would take Leões to 74 points and keep the squeeze on leaders Porto. Victory for Águias would move them to 72 and into second, sustaining their unbeaten campaign. A draw would keep both in touch in the title race.
