Sporting seal direct Champions League spot; what pot are the Lions in?

Sporting already knows that it will take part in the next edition of the Champions League and that it will be placed in Pot 2 for the league phase draw. The Lions return to Europe’s top club competition in a demanding competitive context, with the aim of taking the next step in establishing themselves internationally.

29 of the 36 clubs that will take part in the league phase have already secured qualification, with only seven places still to be filled through the qualifiers.

At the end of last Sunday, Roma and Como also secured qualification, with special emphasis on the Italian club, which will be the only confirmed debutant so far. The competitive line-up should only be finalized at the end of August, when the qualifying play-offs are concluded.

With the competition’s new format, the importance of the pots has diminished, since all teams will face opponents from different levels in the league phase, including teams from their own pot. Even so, Sporting’s position in Pot 2 reflects its European ranking and avoids, at least in theory, some of the strongest opponents.

Among Europe’s top clubs, some big names have been left out of this edition, but the overall picture is already practically set. Attention now turns to the end of the qualifiers, which will complete the final list of participants in the competition.
