It has been over three years since Barcelona oversaw the start of the construction work at the Spotify Camp Nou. The Espai Barca project, for which the club recently took out another loan, has been far from straightforward since it began in 2023, and in the last 24 hours, there has now been a tragic incident.
As per Diario AS, a 54-year-old worker died at the Spotify Camp Nou on Friday, as confirmed by the Mossos d’Esquadra in a statement. The police were called shortly after 3:30pm local time after an incident was reported, and despite the best efforts of the authorities on the scene, the person in question passed away.
At present, the work at the Spotify Camp Nou has been focused on constructed a compression ring to support the roof, and according to the police report, the person in question died after receiving a blow to the head whilst this work was being undertaken. In the coming weeks, more information is expected to be released, but for the time being, the matter has been referred to the investigating court on duty, as well as the Department of Enterprise and Labour.
On Saturday, Barcelona took to X to release an official statement addressing the incident at the Spotify Camp Nou, during which they offered their condolences to the family and friends of the worker that passed away.
“FC Barcelona deeply regrets the death of the worker who lost his life yesterday in the workplace accident that occurred during the renovation works at Spotify Camp Nou. The Club wishes to express its deepest condolences and extend its heartfelt support to his family, friends, and colleagues. FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta wishes to personally convey his condolences to the family and places himself at their disposal on behalf of the entire Club.”
