Joelinton is incredibly lucky not have been sent off inside the first half against Manchester United.

The Newcastle United midfielder was shown a yellow card for a pull on Matheus Cunha in the 38th minute, to which he proceeded to sarcastically applaud Peter Bankes.

Such a reaction, in any case, should result in a second yellow being brandished, yet Joelinton escaped being given his marching orders – much to Michael Carrick’s dismay.

“Carrick suggesting to the fourth official that Joelinton should go for the sarcastic applause after getting booked,” penned Samuel Luckhurst on X/Twitter.

However, less than 10 minutes later, Bankes did make use of his red card when showing Jacob Ramsey a second yellow for simulation in the United area.

He was played into a loose ball and was one-on-one with Senne Lammens, but proceeded to drop to the floor when the goalkeeper came out to collect the ball.

Upon closer inspection, it became clear that Lammens had not touched Ramsey in the slightest, prompting the referee to send him off for diving.

Newcastle have since taken the lead on the brink of half-time from the spot; Bruno Fernandes was adjudged to have fouled Anthony Gordon, resulting in Bankes awarding the penalty.

Gordon converted his effort, granting the Magpies a crucial lead to take into the second half now that they’re down to 10 men.
