It was FA Cup 4th round action this Saturday lunchtime for three of Spurs' loanees across two games, with Jamie Donley and Josh Keeley who are both learning their trades at Leyton Orient in League One, had an exciting tie as the champions of England for the last four years Manchester City came to town, and Manor Solomon who had a pretty standard FA Cup fixture in an all Championship clash at home to Millwall.
Donley and Keeley came into this game in good form, individually and as a team, who hadn't lost in the league until the recent defeat to Stockport County since November.
A tight first 15 minutes, but after some good pressure in the middle of the park by Orient on City new boy Nico González, the ball fell to Donley just beyond the halfway line and out of nothing took a shot first time that looped over keeper Stefan Ortega, smashing against the bar but hitting the helpless Ortega on the backside as he went back to retrieve it and trickling into the net.
A slight shame that it doesn't officially go down as a Donley goal and yes you could say a bit lucky, but you make your own luck sometimes and Orient certainly did that here. Keeley would make a vital save from Omar Marmoush from close range just before the half to keep the lead and the O's would go into the dressing room a goal to the good, aiming to stop City's streak of 17 consecutive wins against lower league opposition in cup competitions.
In the second half City showed their quality, on 56 minutes a shot from the edge of the box from Rico Lewis deflected off his own team mate Abdukodir Khusanov, who was subbed on for the start of the second half. Keeley was called into action again after a low driven shot by veteran Ilkay Gündogan was heading for the far corner, but the Irishman got down low quickly to keep it out.
City would eventually grab a winner, Jack Grealish would play a brilliant ball round the back for substitute Kevin De Bruyne, and the legendary midfielder would get their first to delicately flick it past Keeley to give City a 1-2 win. A valiant effort from Orient, especially the Spurs youngsters, with Keeley making seven saves and Donley receving the official BBC man of the match award for his performance. To do that and be on the losing side against Man City shows how well he played.
Donley and Keeley can now concentrate on trying to claim a play-off position for the O's, as they welcome Mansfield to Brisbane Road on Tuesday. On the same night their opponents from today will be hosting Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Júnior and the rest of them, as they play Real Madrid in a UEFA Champions League play-off round. What a sport football is.
Solomon and Leeds United had a pretty disappointing day, they would have been clear favourites to beat mid table Millwall, however manager Daniel Farke made many changes including the Israeli, as they are focused on an automatic promotion spot to return the club for the Premier League. Solomon would come onto the pitch at the 70th minute with the side already 0-2 down, and had no impact on the game as that's how it stayed. Leeds out the cup but it's not a result they'll be too gutted about. They now travel to Watford on Tuesday night where they'll be looking to keep or even widen the gap between them and the rest of the chasing pack, and I'm sure Solomon will be back on the starting lineup!
