Spurs loanee Luka Vuskovic (19) delivers another world class Bundesliga performance

Another world class match from Tottenham loanee Luka Vuskovic in the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon renders it even more unlikely that the 19-year-old Croatian phenom will be playing in German football next year. That is, unless Bayern Munich opt to purchase the now €40m-valued defender from his north London outfit. It’s quite doubtful that Spurs would allow even that to happen.

Vuskovic turned in another world class performance on Saturday afternoon in the 1-2 away win over Wolfsburg. The twice capped Croatian international both earned and converted a penalty himself. Later, he drew (somewhat controversially) the game winning penalty. Under German football accounting rules, a player who wins a penalty is credited with an assist. Vuskovic thus earned both a goal and an assist on the 0-1.

Luka Vuskovic demonstrates incredible passion for football

Vuskovic famously broke two fingers celebrating his first Bundesliga goal. In a heated derby match against city rivals St. Pauli, the teenager went completely nuts when St. Pauli supporters taunted him over his controversial elder brother Mario. After the midweek defeat in a make-up Bundesliga match against Bayer Leverkusen, Vuskovic repeatedly kicked the post in frustration and threw his cleats in front of the coaching bench after missing a late chance.

While such acts can be construed as a mark of immaturity, one can also interpret them as the characteristics of a player who throws his full emotions into his game. The behavior has produced five goals and two assists in 22 Bundesliga appearances this year. Vuskovic, despite his age and relative lack of experience, has captained the defensive corps of a newly promoted Bundesliga club and very nearly taken them out of the relegation discussion.

Nicolai Remberg gushes over Luka Vuskovic

Unfortunately, there wasn’t much of chance to grab quotes about Vuskovic’s latest masterclass after a post-match scuffle and Wolfsburg fan protest action led to Hamburg professionals departing the stadium grounds early. Hamburg midfielder Nicolai Remberg – who also commented on the clash on the pitch – spoke on his teammate. HSV head coach Merlin Polzin also commented on Vuskovic’s soft centralized penalty take in the 33rd minute that still went in.

Luka is unbelievable,” Remberg said. “I always want to say he’s a world star, but he’s still so young. I’m just so grateful that he’s with us this year.

We need to talk about his penalty kick,” Polzin added. “It wasn’t that confident, but in general you can sense that Luka is very keen to see a Vuskovic wearing the number 44 shirt playing in Hamburg in the Bundesliga again next season.
