Tottenham Hotspur were torn apart in Madrid as their miserable run continued with a chaotic defeat to Atlético Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

In a tie Igor Tudor had described as almost a free hit, Spurs immediately crumbled under pressure, with three mistakes leading to three goals inside the opening 15 minutes in a 5-2 defeat.

Antonín Kinský will undoubtedly feel devastated after gifting Atlético two early goals. The first came when the Czech goalkeeper lost his footing, presenting the ball to Ademola Lookman, who squared for Julián Álvarez. The Argentine slipped in Marcos Llorente, who calmly slotted home.

Tottenham’s misery quickly deepened when Micky van de Ven slipped in possession, allowing Antoine Griezmann to waltz through before finishing neatly for Atlético’s second.

Before Spurs fans could even lift their heads, another disastrous moment followed. Kinský passed straight to Álvarez, who simply walked the ball into the net to make it three. The 22 year-old-goalkeeper was then substituted after just 15 minutes.

Vicario, who replaced Kinský, was quickly called into action and produced several impressive saves, but he could do nothing to prevent Robin Le Normand’s header crossing the line, with goal line technology confirming Atlético’s fourth.

Tottenham did manage to pull one back before half-time when Pedro Porro finished smartly after a neat exchange with Richarlison.

Spurs briefly looked more settled after the break. Porro delivered an excellent cross which Richarlison met powerfully, only for Jan Oblak to produce a superb save.

Any hope of a spectacular comeback was short lived. Atlético swiftly moved the ball forward before Griezmann produced a wonderful first time pass to Álvarez, who burst through the Tottenham defence and calmly finished to make it 5–1.

Another defensive mistake, this time from Atlético, allowed Dominic Solanke to run through on goal and pull one back for Spurs, though it did little to disguise a miserable night in Madrid.

While Spurs’ focus remains very much on remaining in the Premier League, this dreadful defeat will only add to the pressure Tudor already finds himself under having lost all four of his games in charge.
