Mason Greenwood is expected to agree to a move to Olympique de Marseille as SS Lazio and Napoli have all but given up hope of the player joining them.

The Englishman has been at the centre of a massive transfer tug of war this summer window so far.

United are content to sell as the money received from a move would be considered pure profit and work wonders for the club’s own transfer budget.

Greenwood himself is also said to be keen to find a resolution on his future as soon as possible as United have been back training a week and played their first pre-season game yesterday evening as a young side fell 1-0 to Rosenborg in Norway.

Italian clubs Napoli and Lazio have expressed interest in the forward and the Romans have even made a bid of €25 million for him.

Nonetheless, Marseille are in the lead for the 22 year old as they have had a bid of €31.6million for the player accepted by Manchester United and despite criticism from the French city’s mayor, a deal looks to be progressing.

It was reported here last night that Greenwood was in fact drifting towards accepting the Ligue 1 side’s proposal.

Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport double down on this and report that Greenwood “is further away” from Lazio and that the French club’s manager “Roberto De Zerbi’s pressing, which continues every other day, is having the desired effect.”

The Italian coach has already laid out how important he sees the Greenwood signing and claimed he would treat him like one of his children were he to move to the south of France.

The Italian paper continues by stating “the English winger could say yes to Olympique Marseille in these hours” with the pressure on him as United’s pre-season preparations are well underway.

It is also claimed that despite Greenwood’s father meeting with Lazio yesterday, “the English winger seems to be convincing himself to move to France. The courtship of De Zerbi, who knew him in the Premier League, would overcome the environmental resistance and hostility of the Velodrome.”

From a United point of view, the transfer needs to get done as soon as possible, as the longer it drags on, the less Erik ten Hag’s side know about their own budget for the window, as they have some key financial decisions to make on current targets like Manuel Ugarte and Jarrad Branthwaite.
