St Mirren look set to be without first choice goalkeeper Shamal George for Sunday’s Scottish Cup Semi Final against Celtic. The English ‘keeper was forced off in the first half of Celtic’s lowkey 1-0 win over the Paisley outfit but interim manager Craig McLeish has revealed that he has a fresh injury concern.
Speaking on Thursday afternoon, McLeish confirmed that the player is a doubt for the game, meaning Ryan Mullen is in pole position to start between the sticks at Hampden.
“We need to assess it. He’s only just went over his ankle so we’re hoping that he’s going to be okay. Ryan came in at the weekend and did great in place of Shamal throughout the game.
“If Ryan steps in then we’re more than comfortable and confident with what Ryan can do as well. We need to wait on Shamal’s update and whoever’s in goal for us, we’re confident.”
George made some crucial saves in the Premier Sports Cup Final against Wilfried Nancy’s side to deny the Hoops. Mullen was not really tested after coming on, given how a large chunk of the game went. St Mirren under McLeish have impressed, opting for a more possession based approach rather than the style adopted by predecessor Stephen Robinson.
Celtic have a number of players out long term such as Julian Araujo, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota. However, Alistair Johnston and Callum Osmand are nearing a return to first team action.
The winners of the clash will face either Falkirk or Dunfermline, who face off at the National Stadium on Saturday.
