FC Barcelona were successful in cutting down their deficit at the top of the La Liga table as they emerged victorious in their today’s match against Alaves. Last night, Real Madrid had fallen to a defeat against Espanyol, and thus, the Catalans are now only four points behind them.

However, it was not an easy win to get. The Blaugranes found it difficult to get the ball into the back of the net, with Robert Lewandowski scoring the only goal of the match in the second half.

Another player who had a good outing in this game was the central defender Pau Cubarsí, who added another 90 minutes to his tally this season.

As Mundo Deportivo has reported, he also spoke to the media after the game, and highlighted how difficult it was to get this win:

“Alavés is always a tough opponent. It’s never easy; these are difficult matches that often go unnoticed. I’m very happy to have kept a clean sheet, which gives us confidence.”

Hansi Flick had to make some changes in his team to get a goal after a rather slow first half, and Cubarsí revealed how it helped them get the win:

“The coach wanted us to have more rhythm, play faster, and position ourselves higher up the pitch earlier. We moved them around, and they eventually got tired.”

Following this win, there are still 16 matches left and Barcelona are only 4 points behind Real Madrid. Thus, the league is still quite open, with Atletico Madrid being another contender for the title along with these two teams.

Cubarsí commented on how the Blaugrana team was always confident of their chances of overcoming the deficit: “We knew there was still a lot of the league left, but we had to win no matter what.”

Thus, as the 18-year-old defender noted, this was a difficult but much-needed win for Barcelona. Hopefully, they will be able to keep this winning momentum up as Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are set to face each other next week, and with at least one of these teams sure to drop points, they should be ready to reduce the deficit even more.
