FLW take a look at the latest Sunderland transfer news.

Sunderland have had a relatively quiet start to 2025, with little movement either way at the Stadium of Light.

However, that could soon change with plenty of rumours surrounding the club as we head towards the second weekend of the month.

The Black Cats have a break from league action this Saturday as they take on Stoke City in the FA Cup. Following that they are straight back into the Championship with a huge Friday night clash against promotion rivals Burnley.

Regis Le Bris' side are currently sitting in fourth place, but have closed the gap in recent games with crucial wins against Sheffield United and Portsmouth putting them right back in the hunt.

This January should allow them to aid their promotion bid and small additions across the pitch will enhance their squad come February.

So, at Football League World we have detailed the current transfer news surrounding the club.

Enzo Le Fee having medical ahead of Sunderland move

The transfer that all Sunderland fans have been keeping an eye on over the past week is Enzo Le Fee's potential move to the North East.

Initially, the Northern Echo reported interest but said that the Black Cats would have to wait and see what AS Roma wanted to do with the 24-year-old.

Since then, rumours have advanced into concrete talks and, as per Gazzetta dello Sport, the Frenchman is set to have his medical today (9th January).

As detailed by the Italian outlet, Le Fee will join on a six-month loan deal, but should Sunderland secure promotion, then they will have to pay Roma a figure of €23 million, to make the move permanent.

This deal is therefore on the verge of completion, and the Wearsiders will be hoping to see Le Fee replicate the impressive form he displayed at Lorient under current boss Le Bris.

Jobe Bellingham's potential Premier League move off the cards

A player who most Sunderland fans expected to receive interest was Jobe Bellingham. The 19-year-old has been in sparkling form this term and his partnership with Dan Neil has propped the Black Cats right near the upper echelons of the league table.

Unsurprisingly, this has attracted Premier League sides and at present Arsenal, Manchester United and Crystal Palace are keen.

According to TalkSport, he is valued at £20 million, with Tottenham and West Ham United also credited with interest.

However, The Sun are now reporting that Sunderland are determined to keep a hold of their top asset amid their promotion bid.

Instead, it seems more likely that he will make a move in the summer, with a potential transfer to Borussia Dortmund - following in the footsteps of his older brother, Jude.

Sunderland to miss out on Louie Barry

Louie Barry's return to Aston Villa from Stockport County came as no surprise given his superb form, and it feels like every Championship club has had a link to him at some stage.

According to the Sunday Mirror print edition (15th December, page 67) the Black Cats, Leeds United and Burnley were keen, but links have gone quiet for Sunderland since then.

Instead, it now appears that Hull City and Millwall are leading the race, with the Tigers keen to utilise their strong working relationship with the Villains following Jaden Philogene's previous spell.

This now appears to be a difficult deal for Sunderland to secure, and with interest from their side fading, it seems likely they will steer clear of pursuing it further.

Sunderland expected to retain Anthony Patterson

Another development that will please Sunderland fans is that Anthony Patterson is likely to remain at the Stadium of Light this January.

According to Callum O'Connell of Football Insider, Le Bris is 'confident' that his star keeper will be here to help them in their fight for promotion.

Man United, Crystal Palace, Wolves and Spurs were all keeping tabs, but with Patterson content at Sunderland and the prospect of Premier League football next season, he sees no reason to leave, making his continued stay in the North East increasingly likely.

This is great news for Sunderland supporters who will be desperate to see as much of the squad stay this month.
