Sunderland visit Newcastle United at St James Park on Sunday afternoon in the Tyne-Wear derby, with discipline under scrutiny.

Per TransferMarkt, Newcastle are ninth in the Premier League fair play table with 48 yellow cards and three reds, while Sunderland are 15th with 60 yellows and two reds. Arsenal top the standings on 40 yellows and no reds, Chelsea are 20th with 66 yellows and 7 reds.

In December, the Black Cats edged the first league derby since 2016 as an own goal from Magpies record signing Nick Woltemade decided it. Regis Le Bris’ side rode a fierce atmosphere on Wearside, adding to a strong first half of their top-flight return.

Victory on Tyneside would complete a league double and deliver an eighth league derby success in the last nine meetings.

Eddie Howe’s side will look to respond, aiming to avenge December’s defeat and halt a poor Premier League derby run over the past 14 years. A home win would be their first Tyneside derby triumph since Kevin Nolan’s hat-trick inspired a 5-1 win over Steve Bruce’s Sunderland in October 2010.
