Sunderland head to St James Park on Sunday seeking to stretch their strong league record against Newcastle United in the latest Tyne-Wear derby. According to Sunderland Echo, here is how the last five meetings unfolded.
April 2015, Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle United, Premier League. Steven Fletcher nodded to Jermaine Defoe just before half-time and the striker crashed in a stunning volley to clinch the points for Dick Advocaat’s side.
October 2015, Sunderland 3-0 Newcastle United, Premier League. Fabricio Coloccini was dismissed on the stroke of half-time for a foul on Steven Fletcher, Adam Johnson converted the penalty, and Billy Jones and Fletcher added second-half goals.
March 2016, Newcastle United 1-1 Sunderland, Premier League. With both clubs fighting relegation, Jermaine Defoe put the visitors ahead with a clinical finish, but Aleksandar Mitrovic levelled to secure a point.
January 2024, Sunderland 0-3 Newcastle United, FA Cup third round. Premier League Newcastle earned a first derby win since August 2011 as Dan Ballard’s own goal was followed by Miguel Almiron pouncing on a defensive error to set up Alexander Isak early in the second half for 2-0, before Isak added a penalty to confirm the Magpies’ place in the fourth round.
December 2025, Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle United, Premier League. After a nine-year absence from the top flight, the league derby returned to Wearside and an own goal from club record signing Nick Woltemade decided it.
It has been a memorable Premier League return under Regis Le Bris, with eye-catching displays against Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal. Completing a league double over Eddie Howe’s side on Sunday would cap that progress.
