Sunderland have been handed a lift ahead of their Premier League return, with Robin Roefs back in training at the Academy of Light. He has been out since the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth in February with a hamstring issue. It is not yet clear if he will be fully fit to face Spurs on Sunday, though that has been the target.
Spurs have suffered a blow as Mohammed Kudus has hit a setback in his quad recovery. The club said in a statement that he returned to team training last week but now needs specialist review and potentially surgery after the significant injury sustained at Sunderland in January. The extent is unknown and there are some concerns he may miss the rest of the campaign.
Reinildo and Enzo Le Fée were pictured in training and are in line for greater involvement on Sunday after brief but telling cameos against Newcastle United. Nordi Mukiele also trained after a calf issue, having been an unused substitute in the derby win.
Dan Ballard remains a major doubt with a hamstring issue. The game is expected to come too soon for Bertrand Traoré, Nilson Angulo, Romaine Mundle and Jocelin Ta Bi. Angulo has resumed some individual work on the Academy of Light pitches.
Spurs are one point above the bottom three ahead of De Zerbi’s first game in charge. Both head coaches will hold pre-match press conferences on Friday afternoon, when injury updates are expected.
