Sunderland have dismissed claims they have opened talks over a £40m move for AS Monaco striker Folarin Balogun. Sunderland Echo understands club sources have firmly denied any discussions.

Reports on Monday suggested negotiations were under way regarding a potential deal worth around £40m for the forward.

The club’s position is that no talks are taking place over Balogun. Meanwhile, Sunderland continue to assess several targets as Régis Le Bris and the recruitment team shape the squad for the new season.

Balogun is not currently the subject of negotiations despite external speculation. The size of the mooted fee would have made it one of the biggest transfers in Sunderland’s history and drew understandable attention among supporters.

As it stands, there is no substance to suggestions that the club have entered talks on a £40m agreement. The window can shift quickly, and Sunderland are expected to stay active before the deadline as they prepare for European football.

The club have shown a readiness to invest significantly when the right player and deal arise, but they are distancing themselves from this Balogun link.
