Sunderland ‘in talks’ with Jose Fonte over coaching role | OneFootball

Sunderland are in talks with former Portugal defender Jose Fonte about joining Régis Le Bris’ coaching staff. The Sun first reported the approach.

Discussions are understood to be progressing for the 42-year-old, though nothing has been finalised. He would join the first-team set-up if an agreement is reached.

Fonte retired in May after 882 senior appearances and a European Championship win with Portugal in 2016. His arrival would add significant Premier League and international experience at the Stadium of Light.

Le Bris’ squad returned to the Academy of Light for pre-season on Thursday. Fonte was not present as talks continue.

Best known in England for seven years at Southampton, he joined from Crystal Palace in 2010 and made almost 300 appearances. He also had a stint at West Ham.

Sunderland are exploring whether a deal can be agreed. At this stage, no appointment has been confirmed.
