Premier League newcomers Sunderland are readying their initial offer to sign defender Jhon Lucumi from Bologna, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The 27-year-old has emerged as a top target as the club strives to build a strong squad capable of maintaining their Premier League status following promotion.
Lucumi has been a key figure for Bologna since joining from Genk in 2022, accumulating over 100 appearances for the Serie A club and playing a pivotal role in their 2024-25 Coppa Italia triumph.
His performances have drawn attention from multiple Premier League clubs, including Sunderland and Bournemouth, with the former now poised to make their first official move.
Lucumi’s contract has a €28 million release clause valid until July 17. Sunderland have opted not to activate this clause but plan to negotiate a deal once it expires.
With Lucumi entering the final year of his contract and no renewal in sight, Bologna may be pressured into selling this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer next year.
Known for his composure under pressure and strength in 1v1 situations, Lucumi ranked in the top 10 for accurate passes per game and accurate long balls per game of all Serie A centre-backs last season.
Having earned 28 caps for Colombia and featured in two Copa America tournaments, his international experience adds to his appeal for a club aiming to stabilise its defence after promotion.
Sunderland’s recruitment team, led by sporting director Florent Ghisolfi, has already strengthened the squad with six new signings this summer.
However, reinforcing the backline remains a priority for the Black Cats ahead of their Premier League opener against West Ham United in August.
