Sunderland will keep away supporters in the North Stand Upper at the Stadium of Light next season after the Premier League approved a one-season exemption, the club said in a statement. Talks with the league have been held ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Competition rules require at least some away fans to be pitchside at Premier League matches. Newcastle United have had an exemption on safety grounds since their 2017 return to the top flight.
Sunderland are seeking a permanent exemption, arguing that relocating away fans would significantly increase the risk of supporter crossover during arrival and exit.
The club’s assessment has been independently backed and fully supported by the Safety Advisory Group. For now, the dispensation covers only 2026/27 while the Premier League continues to review the case.
Separately, the club is working to expand safe standing in home areas for 2026/27 after positive feedback and reported safety benefits.
Additional safe standing for 2,500 fans will be installed in the South West Corner next season.
