Sunderland are set for a seven-figure boost this summer as multiple players prepare for the World Cup.

According to Sunderland Echo, FIFA’s Club Benefit Programme, which at Qatar 2022 paid about $209 million at roughly $10,000 per player per day, has risen to around $355 million and, for the first time, now also covers qualification. Sunderland have already banked income.

Noah Sadiki and Melker Ellborg edged closer after being in the DR Congo and Sweden squads that won play-offs on Tuesday night.

Regular internationals Granit Xhaka, Omar Alderete, Habib Diarra and Nilson Angulo, for Switzerland, Paraguay, Senegal and Ecuador, who have qualified, are locks if fit. Dutch contenders include Robin Roefs, Brian Brobbey and Lutsharel Geertruida, the latter having played in qualifying, with his versatility surely counting in his favour.

Chemsdine Talbi started for Morocco on Tuesday after AFCON involvement and seems likely to travel, while Wilson Isidor will also travel with Haiti after choosing them, debuting and scoring during this break. Simon Adingra and Arthur Masuaku could also feature for Ivory Coast and DR Congo, though their Sunderland futures by summer are uncertain.

If all 12 make their squads, Sunderland are guaranteed payments for preparation and the group stage, worth about £200,000 per player for a three-week stay on 2022 rates, or roughly £2,250,000 in total, which could be higher this summer and rise if nations progress. Modest next to Premier League income, but welcome.
