Soon after full-time, Sunderland switched their cover image across platforms to a shot of the travelling support celebrating inside St James’s Park. The photo features a banner reading 'Eddie Howe’s black-and-white army', a nod to the hosts that drew a flood of online reaction.

They also posted Brian Brobbey’s winning goal set to Sam Fender’s Rein Me In, featuring Olivia Dean. Given Fender’s Newcastle allegiance, the pick carried extra bite as the clip spread rapidly across social feeds.

On Tyneside the mood is fractious, with scrutiny on Eddie Howe after back-to-back derby defeats and a sharp turn from the optimism that followed his Carabao Cup triumph. Howe said he remains fully committed, was disappointed in himself and his delivery over the last week, and that he protects his players while absorbing blame. He described the Barcelona match as very tough, this defeat tougher still, and said the next few days would be painful as Newcastle look to respond.
