Sunderland’s buoyant Premier League return has outstripped expectations, and Regis Le Bris’ side head out of the international break chasing European football for only the second time in the club’s history, the first since 1973.
Momentum from their Championship play-off final win over Sheffield United, allied to a fruitful summer window, set the tone with an opening-day defeat of West Ham United as Eliezer Mayenda, Wilson Isidor and Dan Ballard scored at a sold-out Stadium of Light. Results rolled on with victories over Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and AFC Bournemouth, and hard-earned draws with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. According to Transfermarkt, the squad is valued at €381.95m, 16th in the Premier League.
The derby double over Newcastle United has defined the campaign, a Nick Woltemade own goal deciding December’s meeting before Chemsdine Talbi and Brian Brobbey turned the return on Tyneside into a 2-1 comeback earlier this month.
Highest-valued Black Cats include Habib Diarra at €32.00m and Noah Sadiki at €30.00m. Brian Brobbey, Enzo Le Fee, Chemsdine Talbi and Chris Rigg are listed at €25.00m, with Trai Hume at €22.00m. Lutsharel Geertruida and Dan Ballard are €20.00m, and Nordi Mukiele €18.00m.
There are seven matches left, with trips to Aston Villa, Wolves and Everton, and home games against Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and Chelsea.
Across the division, Manchester City lead the value table at €1.31bn, ahead of Arsenal on €1.23bn, Chelsea on €1.16bn, Liverpool on €1.02bn and Tottenham at €802.50m. At the other end sit Wolves on €277.10m and Burnley on €252.65m.
