Sunderland have 10 players in the final months of their deals who could leave for free, including Bertrand Traore and loanee Lutsharel Geertruida.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats are eighth after 20 games with 30 points and four defeats, four points off fourth and 16 clear of relegation, and expect a quiet January after a productive summer.
Fifteen signings arrived in summer, and eight others are into the last six months so can talk to other clubs.
The 10 are Simon Moore, Bertrand Traore, Lutsharel Geertruida, Joe Anderson, Jay Matete, Dennis Cirkin, Dan Neil, Blondy Nna Noukeu, Zak Johnson and Harrison Jones.
Traore scored in November’s 3-2 win over Bournemouth and averages 1.18 chances created and 2.06 successful take-ons per 90 minutes, ranking third and first among Sunderland players.
The club hold a one-year option on Traore. Geertruida’s RB Leipzig loan is understood to include a summer option, he has nine Premier League starts and nearly 900 minutes, and the report says there is a decent chance it is taken.
Dennis Cirkin and Dan Neil have had bit-part roles and are unlikely to extend. Others are mainly youngsters, while six deals run to summer 2027, including Arthur Masuaku, Reinildo and Luke O’Nien.
Sunderland have drawn their last four Premier League games and five of their last seven. They go to Brentford on Wednesday night, then Everton away in the FA Cup third round on their first-ever trip to Hill Dickinson Stadium, before hosting Crystal Palace after a week’s break.
