Sunderland rank sixth in the Premier League for net spend this season, underscoring their ambitious return to the top flight ahead of Tottenham’s visit.
According to Sunderland Echo, only Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United have higher net spend, with Sunderland on €155.59m.
A 2-1 comeback at Newcastle before the international break moved Regis Le Bris’s side to 11th, a point above their rivals and three behind seventh-placed Brentford. They still have an outside chance of European qualification, and relegation worries were dismissed long ago.
Spending has been driven by big-money arrivals including Habib Diarra, Brian Brobbey and Chemsdine Talbi. Sales of Jobe Bellingham and Tom Watson, worth a combined €42.5m, have offset some of that outlay.
Tottenham’s outlay is striking given they sit 17th, a point above the drop zone and 13 points behind Sunderland, whom they face next Sunday.
At the other end, Chelsea’s €4.90m net spend is the smallest negative figure in the division, helped by major sales including Noni Madueke, Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix and Lesley Ugochukwu. Brentford, Brighton, Wolves and Bournemouth are the only sides to record a profit this season.
