Regis Le Bris has leaned on a settled core as Sunderland chase Europe, and the numbers reveal the strongest XI by minutes this season. According to Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats have impressed under their head coach in the Premier League.
They have taken eye-catching wins over Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Brentford, and completed a league double against Newcastle United. There have also been hard-earned draws with Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool.
An intriguing run-in awaits after the international break, with Sunderland three points shy of the top seven and still pursuing what would be only a second European campaign in their history. Players are expected to return before next month’s home meeting with Tottenham Hotspur, leaving Le Bris with selection calls against opponents firmly fighting relegation.
By minutes, the XI features Robin Roefs in goal on 2,520 minutes. The defence is Nordi Mukiele 2,165, Omar Alderete 2,356, Dan Ballard 2,008 and Trai Hume 2,585.
In midfield, Granit Xhaka 2,273, Noah Sadiki 2,297 and Habib Diarra 1,103. The front line is Enzo Le Fee 2,306, Brian Brobbey 1,370 and Chemsdine Talbi 1,330.
After Sunday’s derby win against Newcastle, Le Bris said hitting 40 points so early in this first season was probably unexpected. He noted injuries and a bit of fatigue, insisted there would be no excuses, and stressed the team’s identity, togetherness and a community used to suffering. He pointed to the play-offs 10 months ago as proof that patience through difficult spells can reinforce pillars and create better days with a full squad and a bit more freshness.
