Sunderland and Crystal Palace are setting the Premier League pace at the World Cup finals. The Black Cats have 12 internationals in North America.
According to Sunderland Echo, Brian Brobbey has three for the Netherlands, while Granit Xhaka, linked with Chelsea in recent days, captains Switzerland.
Wilson Isidor hit a long-range strike in defeat for Haiti, but Nilson Angulo’s goal helped Ecuador shock Germany and reach the knockouts.
Habib Diarra became the fifth Sunderland scorer at these finals, finishing from close range in Senegal’s comprehensive win against Iraq on Friday. That also put Sunderland alongside Palace as the Premier League club providing the most group-stage goals.
Isidor now heads home for a break before pre-season, while several team-mates prepare for knockout ties. Sunderland’s contingent could extend their impact.
Club totals after the group stage: Sunderland seven and Crystal Palace seven, Newcastle United, Arsenal and Manchester United five, Liverpool and Manchester City four, Wolverhampton Wanderers three, Brighton and West Ham two, Aston Villa, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur one.
Erling Haaland leads Premier League scorers on four, with Brian Brobbey, Ismaila Sarr, Matheus Cunha and Yoane Wissa on three.
