Football League World takes a look at how Opta thinks the Championship top six will finish following the latest Southampton and Wrexham results

Southampton have leapfrogged Wrexham into the Championship play-off places thanks to their 1-0 victory over Norwich City on Wednesday.

The Red Dragons remain level on points with the Saints, but Tuesday's 3-1 defeat to Watford proved costly, as Tonda Eckert's men took full advantage.

Southampton will be desperate to cling on to sixth spot with just eight games remaining, whereas Wrexham are eager to remain hot on the Hampshire outfit's heels.

Meanwhile, Hull City are now at risk of falling out of the play-offs, thanks to a poor run of form which has seen them lose three of their last five games.

Following the latest twists and turns at the top end of the Championship table, Football League World has taken a look at how Opta's supercomputer has predicted the top six to finish.

Southampton - 6th

As previously mentioned, Southampton's victory over Norwich has seen them jump above Wrexham and into the all-important play-off places.

And Opta's supercomputer believes that the Saints have what it takes to hold off the Red Dragons and beat them to sixth place, but Eckert's men know that they cannot afford any slip-ups.

The fact that the St Mary's Stadium club are now firmly in the play-off conversation is a huge testament to the remarkable work Eckert has done following the disastrous start to the season his club endured under former boss Will Still.

Hull City - 5th

Hull were previously in the automatic promotion picture, but three defeats in their last five games have instead left the Tigers at risk of dropping out of the Championship play-offs.

However, the supercomputer thinks that Sergej Jakirovic's men have what it takes to seal a fifth-place finish, which would see them competing for a place in next season's Premier League.

Millwall - 4th

In contrast to Hull, Millwall are still in strong contention to beat either Ipswich Town or Middlesbrough to a second-place finish, but they were hurt by a 2-1 defeat against relegation-threatened Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, 14 March.

Opta's supercomputer has predicted the Lions will finish fourth, though, which is still an admirable outcome for a club who haven't finished in the Championship play-offs since winning promotion from League One back in 2017.

Ipswich Town - 3rd

Ipswich have what it takes to leapfrog Middlesbrough into second spot, according to many Championship observers, while the Tractor Boys have a game in hand over Boro.

However, the supercomputer has instead suggested that Kieran McKenna's men will have to settle for a third-place finish, meaning they will have to navigate the play-offs to seal an immediate Premier League return.

Middlesbrough - 2nd

Middlesbrough previously held the advantage over Coventry City in the Championship title race, but that feels like a distant memory now, thanks to their poor form of late.

Boro have instead been left nervously looking over their shoulder at Ipswich and Millwall, but Opta has predicted that Kim Hellberg's men will hang onto the second automatic promotion spot.

Coventry City - 1st

Coventry have been the best team in the second tier for the vast majority of the campaign, and will be good value if, indeed, they are crowned champions come May.

Frank Lampard's men endured a worrying start to 2026, earning just two victories from their six league fixtures in January, but a triumph over Middlesbrough on 16 February marked the beginning of a six-game winning streak.

It is no surprise that the supercomputer has backed the Sky Blues to win the Championship's biggest prize.
