Suriname have appointed Henk ten Cate as head coach ahead of March’s intercontinental World Cup play-offs.
The federation announced the 71-year-old’s appointment on Sunday, expressing confidence that his expertise, tactical knowledge and leadership can lift the team.
Ten Cate previously managed Ajax and worked as an assistant at Barcelona and Chelsea.
He will attempt to take Suriname to a first World Cup finals. They face Bolivia in Monterrey on 26 March. A win would set up Iraq on 31 March for a place at next summer’s finals, in group I with France, Norway and Senegal.
Suriname missed automatic qualification last month after a 1-3 defeat to Guatemala in the final Concacaf Group A match, which allowed Panama to finish top.
That setback led to the resignation of former Netherlands international goalkeeper Stanley Menzo, and Ten Cate served as Suriname assistant under head coach Aron Winter in 2023.
