Swansea City and Watford are both tracking Man City youngster Max Alleyne, who is also attracting attention from clubs in Europe.
Watford and Swansea City are both interested in Man City youngster Max Alleyene, with the defender expected to leave on loan during the summer transfer window.
The 20-year-old started out at Southampton, but he moved to City as a teenager back in 2021, in a deal worth around £1.5m, which was a significant sum considering he was just 15 at the time.
Since then, Alleyne’s game time has come in City’s academy, whilst he has also represented England at youth level up to U20 level.
Despite his potential, Alleyne is understandably way down the pecking order at Pep Guardiola’s side, so a temporary switch is seen as the best next step for his development.
And, according to The Athletic, Watford and Swansea are ‘battling’ for his signature, whilst there is also interest in the player from clubs in Europe.
The update claims that Alleyne will sign a new contract with City before heading out on loan, which will protect his value for the Premier League side.
Both Swansea and Watford have enjoyed strong summer transfer windows, with the pair bidding to build upon respective mid-table finishes in the previous campaign. Swansea have recently completed the loan signing of West Ham United defender Kaelan Casey, who has accompanied the likes of Cameron Burgess, Ethan Galbraith and Zeidane Inoussa in moving to South Wales.
Watford, meanwhile, turned heads with the capture of one-time Bayern Munich prodigy Nestory Irankunda, having also signed Luca Kjrerrumgaard, Hector Kyprianou and Othmane Maamma, among others, this summer.
It’s known that City boast one of the best academies in the country, so clubs are always looking to bring in loan players that can help them over the course of the season.
Clearly, Alleyne is someone that they highly rate, which is evident by the fee that they paid to sign him from Southampton.
But, the reality is that he is at a stage in his career where he needs competitive football on a weekly basis, so it’s no surprise that City are looking to find a Championship club for the player.
From the perspective of Watford or Swansea, Alleyne would tick a lot of boxes. He is a modern centre-back who looks to defend on the front foot, and he is also comfortable in possession, which can allow them to build from the back.
Any move would be a risk in the sense that Alleyne is unproven in the Championship, but he needs a chance to show what he can do.
The level of interest in the youngster shows that he is well regarded in the game, so whoever does win the race to sign Alleyne will see this as a real coup, and you would expect some major developments on this potential deal ahead of the new Championship season, which starts this weekend.
