Bayer Leverkusen will bid farewell to Jonathan Tah this summer, with the centre-back set to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires.
Following Leverkusen’s 1-1 draw with St. Pauli on Sunday, Tah confirmed his impending departure in an interview with Kicker, responding with a firm "yes" when asked whether his exit is set in stone.
He emphasized that the decision had been communicated to the club some time ago.
“The club has known for a while,” Tah said.
“I’ve always been transparent about it. There came a point when I made the decision not to extend my contract and not to stay here.”
As for what comes next, the 29-year-old has not set a deadline for his future move.
“No, to be honest, I don’t have a time frame,” he added.
Speculation over his next destination is growing. Barcelona were once considered the frontrunners, but ongoing financial issues at the Catalan club could complicate any potential move.
Tah was close to joining Bayern Munich last summer, but the deal fell through, as the clubs couldn't agree on a transfer fee. Since then, mutual interest appears to have cooled.
More recently, top clubs in England and Italy have reportedly expressed interest, and rumors have linked Real Madrid with the experienced defender.
