Thanks Miggy

With the imminent departure of the popular Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United seemingly only days away, I thought I would have a look back at some of the happy chappies similar to Miggy, who have worn our famous black and white stripes with pride during the Premier League years.

No one could ever celebrate a goal with such gusto as Barry Venison. I have went on record before as saying that Barry was our unofficial CIC (Celebrater in Chief).

He may have once been a mackem, but Barry absolutely loved playing for Newcastle United, and you could see that every time he went out on the pitch.

His fellow full-back John Beresford was a canny and happy sort of bloke, although not when David Ginola wouldn’t drop in for him when John went foraging down the left wing.

Nobby Solano was another one who got what it was to have the privilege to play in front of our supporters. A cheerful and likeable soul, Nobby’s sublime talent and excellent contribution will never be forgotten at United.

Obafemi Martins was a player whose smile seemed as wide as the Tyne Bridge whenever he blasted in one of his trademark howitzers from outside the box.

I used to also love the look on Kevin Nolan’s face when he wheeled away doing the ‘chicken dance’, especially against Sunderland.

My favourite nice guy of the lot scored the greatest goal I have ever seen for United, at Stamford Bridge in 2012.

Papiss Cisse had the most explosive start and impact I have ever witnessed by any United centre forward when he joined our club.

He was literally a smiling assassin and during his first four months as a Toon player, records were smashed, as he went on a joyous personal goalscoring rampage.

Dwight Gayle thoroughly enjoyed our Championship winning season in 2016/17, the pleasure he got from being our top scorer always evident in his demeanor.

Which brings me nicely back onto Wor Miggy.

Miguel Almiron has never ever given Newcastle United anything less than 100% during his time here.

Popular with fans and teammates, this lad can literally light up a room when he smiles.

I know this to be true, because one of my mates who works and helps out with a number of charities for bairns, has told me he has seen him do it.

Miggy has scored some of the most spectacular goals in our resurgence since Eddie Howe came to Newcastle.

He and his family settled well on Tyneside and I hope they’ll always carry some great memories of the area.

When he finally says his goodbyes, I hope he’ll go away happy in the knowledge of how much he is admired and appreciated by all of us.

He is set to rejoin a club whose fans never stopped loving him after he joined us in a club record deal.

Nobby Solano and Papiss Cisse are now adopted Geordies. Good guy Miggy likewise, just like his predecessors he’ll always be welcomed back at Gallowgate with open arms.
